Why was my Direct Debit declined?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

A declined Direct Debit means it was returned unpaid. Here are some common reasons why this happens and what you can do next.

There wasn’t enough money available in your account

Your Direct Debit was returned unpaid because there wasn’t enough money available in your account. This is also known as an insufficient funds transaction.

You need to make sure you have available funds at least one working day prior to the Direct Debit Payment collection date.

Once you've added money to your account, you’ll need to contact the merchant to ask them to try to collect the Direct Debit again or potentially arrange a manual payment.

The Direct Debit was cancelled

If you don’t want the Direct Debit to be cancelled, you can set up the Direct Debit again. This is called reinstating a Direct Debit.

If it was cancelled within the last two months, we can reinstate the Direct Debit for you. Drop us a message in-app and we’ll get it set up.

If it was cancelled over two months ago, you’ll need to contact the merchant to set up a new Direct Debit.

We didn’t recognise the payment reference

You’ll need to contact the merchant and check that when they collect the Direct Debit payment, the reference on the payment should match the Direct Debit Instruction.

Once the Direct Debit is set up with the correct payment reference, the merchant can attempt to collect the Direct Debit in 10 working days.
