How to cancel a Direct Debit

Stop a recurring payment, remove a mandate, or fix a billing error. Learn how to manage automated bank transfers and claim money back.

Cancel a Direct Debit

You can stop a Direct Debit in your Mettle app. Make sure you do this at least one working day before your payment is due. This does not include weekends or bank holidays.

  • Go to the 'Payments' tab

  • Tap ‘Direct Debits’

  • Select the Direct Debit you want to cancel

  • Tap ‘Cancel Direct Debit’

What you need to know

  • Tell the merchant you have cancelled the payment so they don't try to take the money again

  • Check with the merchant if you still owe them money for a service

  • Contact the merchant if the payment has already left your account

  • Ask us to help you start an indemnity claim if a payment was taken by mistake

Important: We cannot turn a cancelled Direct Debit back on. You must ask the merchant to set up a new mandate with a different reference number.
